An Italian poet who wrote the Divine Comedy in the 1300s.
Divine Comedy
Written in the early 1300s by Dante Alighieri. This poem takes the reader on an imaginary journey into hell and purgatory. His jouney summarizes Christian ethnics, showing how people’s actions in life determine their fate in the afterlife.
Gothic Style
Type of European architecture that developed in the Middle Ages, characterized by flying buttresses, ribbed vaulting, thin walls, and high roofs.
Flying Buttresses
Stone supports on the outside of a building that allowed builders to construct higher, thinner walls that contained large stain-glass windows.
Vaulted Ceilings
Pointed arches called vaults form a strong skeleton on which the roof materials is laid.
Gargoyles
Imaginatively carved figures serving as waterspouts to drain water from the roof.
Notre Dame
One of the grandest Gothic cathedrals. Begun in 1163 and took artisans almost two centuries to complete.
Chartres
A city town in France known for its cathedrals.
Illumination
The artistic decoration of books and manuscripts.
