Any EVENT that 1. follows a behavior and 2. increases the rate of that behavior.
You do not reinforce a person, you reinforcer their behavior.
Reinforcer
the PROCEDURE of using a reinforcer to increase the rate of a behavior.
The basic building block of all human behavior.
People are more likely to repeat behavior that produces reinforcement.
Reinforcement
Any behavioral procedure 1. that is unsuccessful in changing behavior or 2. for which a name and definition are untaught.
An EVENT that follows a behavior but does not increase it’s rate.
Unknown
It must FOLLOW the behavior of interest.
It must also CAUSE that behavior to INCREASE in rate.`
Event
An EVENT must have 2 elements to be a REINFORCER…
- It must follow the behavior of interest.
2. it must also cause that behavior to INCREASE in rate.
Refers to an event that the speaker feels another person should like.
The feeling of the speaker does not prove that the event really is a reinforcer.
Reward
The variety of reinforcers…
Social Reinforcers - a smile, a word of praise, agrement or attention.
Edible Reinforcers - candy, snacks or beer.
Play Reinforcers - toys, airplanes, frisbees etc.
Activity Reinforcers - dancing, skydiving or jogging.
Generalized Reinforcers - may consist of money or points.
