Chapter 8 - Photosynthesis Flashcards
Where does the energy for photosynthesis come from?
Light from the sun.
What is the function of the veins in leaves?
The veins contain xylem and pholem; the xylem carries water to the leaf and the pholem transports the glucose made there to other parts of the plant.
Why does photosynthesis slow down in cold conditions?
Lower temperatures slow down the rate of enzyme-controlled reactions.
Give two reasons why collecting the total volume of gas is likely to be more accurate than counting bubbles.
Bubbles can be different sizes; it can be difficult to count them accurately if the bubbles appear very quickly.
Name three substances used for storage in plants.
Starch, fats, oils.
What is meant by the term ‘carnivorous’ plant?
A plant that captures animals (e.g. insects) and obtains nitrates from them by digesting them.
Why is maintaining a steady, optimum temperature important in a greenhouse?
The enzymes in the plants need an optimum temperature to catalyse reactions as fast as possible.
What is likely to be the most expensive requirement in keeping a greenhouse running?
The cost of energy / electricity for heating and lighting.
