Chapter 2 - Cell Division Flashcards
What happens to the chromosomes during mitosis?
One set of chromosomes is pulled to each end of the dividing cell and the nucleus divides.
A cell has nine pairs of chromosomes. The cell divides by mitosis. How many chromosomes are in each new cell?
Each cell has 9 pairs or 18 chromosomes.
What is a meristem?
An actively dividing tissue of a plant.
Why do cells need to differentiate?
Every cell has a particular function; an organism needs a wide variety of specialised cells.
Where are embryonic stem cells found?
In the inner layers of the ball of cells that forms the embryo.
Where are stem cells found in plants
In the meristems.
Give one ethical objection to using embryonic stem cells.
One from: the embryo cannot give permission, the money could be used for other medical conditions.
What is the advantage of therapeutic cloning?
The cells are genetically identical to the person being treated and so are less likely to be rejected.
