Chapter 3 - Organisation And The Digestive System Flashcards
What is a tissue?
A group of cells with similar structure and function.
What is the function of muscular tissue in the stomach?
To churn (mix up) the stomach contents.
Name two glands in the digestive system.
Pancreas, salivary glands, liver.
Where does absorption of the digested food occur?
Small intestine.
What is a complex carbohydrate?
A long chain of simple sugar units bonded / linked together.
What happens to a protein molecule if it is heated?
It changes shape and may be denatured.
What results would you expect if you tested some egg white with:
a) Iodine solution b) Benedict’s solution c) Biuret solution?
a) Iodine solution stays yellow-red (egg white does not contain starch)
b) Benedict’s solution remains blue (egg white does not contain sugar)
c) Biuret solution turns purple (egg white contains protein)
Name the area of an enzyme where other molecules can fit.
Active site.
What is meant by the term “denatured”?
The active site changes shape (so the substrate will not fit into the active site).
What three words do we use to describe the pH of solutions?
Acidic, neutral, alkaline.
Where are digestive enzymes produced?
In the glands (of the digestive system - salivary glands, stomach, pancreas, and cells in the lining of the small intestine).
Which enzymes digest protein?
Proteases
Are conditions in the stomach acidic, neutral or alkaline?
Acidic
Where is bile stored?
In the gall bladder
