what 5 issues might a person of color have being a therapist for a white client
(a) be unable to contain their anger and rage toward their clients, as they view them as the oppressor, especially those with relative privilege; (b) have difficulty understanding the worldview of their clients; (c) be hindered in their ability to establish rapport/empathy with their clients; (e) be guilty of imposing their racial realities upon their clients, (g) feels as if they have to prove themselves as being competent
why do people steer away from discussion of interracial and interethnic issues x3
by not doing anything about it, they can say that everyone is equally racist so they don’t have to change
divide and conquer - in fighting prevents them from organizing against the oppression
divers problems from the holistic picture to only focus on the infighting
how does the zero sum perspetive perpetuate infighting in interracial and interethnic groups
belief that improvement of the conditions of one group comes at the perceived expense of the other group.
so if one group gets ahead, then the other group is dismayed. we must rise together.

ome from a more individualistic culture yet value social relationships and interdependence (half way between individual and collective)
define idiocentric
coming from a highly collectivistic culture yet value independence and personal freedoms (their values are based/centered aroudn themselves)
what are 5 issues that might come up for a counsleor that is a person of color when working with a client that is alos a person of color
. Overidentifying with the client
2. Encountering clashes in cultural values or communication styles
3. Experiencing clashes in communication and counseling styles
4. Receiving and expressing racial animosity
5. Dealing with the racial identity status of the client or counselor
why might a white person struggle with a counselor of color x2
may challenge competency of the therapist (role reversal as seeing the therapist as a person of power)
sees counsleor as a super minority (reverse racism)
as couneslors that are people of color, they might commit counter transference to their white clients by seeing them as an oppressor, what are 4 ways this might present
a) dismissing or diluting the pain and suffering of the White client, (b) being unable to form a working alliance/empathy, (e) distorting or misinterpreting the client’s actions to include a racial motivation, and in rare cases (f) possessing an unconscious desire to harm rather than help the client.
