Primary data is data that has been collected for a specific purpose. Often obtained by asking directly for the needed information (questionnaire or interview) For example, a dairy company might hire someone to stand in the street and ask different people about their cheese and butter preferences.

Secondary data is data has been obtain of sources that already exist, usually originally intended for a different purpose.
For example, a census.
