Chapter 8 Chemical Reactions Flashcards
Activation energy
The energy that must be provided by a collision to break apart the bonds of the reacting molecules.
Catalyst
A substance that increases the rate of reaction by lowering the activation energy.
Chemical equilibrium
The point at which the forward and reverse reactions take place at the same rate so that there is o further change in concentrations of reactants and products.
Collision theory
A model for a chemical reaction that states that molecules must collide with sufficient energy in order to form products.
Le Chartelier’s Principle
When a stress is placed on a system at equilibrium, the equilibrium shifts to relieve that stress.
Rate of reaction
The speed at which reactants are used to form product(s).
