Chapter 8 Flashcards
CAM photosynthesis
A type of photosynthesis exhibited by many succulent plants in which carbon dioxide is taken up and stored during the night to allow the stomata to remain closed during the daytime, decreasing water loss. Abbreviated CAM.
Chlorophyll a
C55H72O5N4Mg A magnesium chelate of dihydroporphyrin that is esterified with phytol and has a cyclopentanone ring; occurs in all higher plants and algae.
Glyceraldehyde-3-phsophate
is a chemical compound that occurs as an intermediate in several central metabolic pathways of all organisms. It is a phosphate ester of the 3-carbon sugar glyceraldehyde and has chemical formula C3H7O6P
Infrared light
An invisible band of radiation at the lower end of the visible light spectrum. With wavelengths from 750 nm to 1 mm, infrared starts at the end of the microwave spectrum and ends at the beginning of visible light. Infrared transmission typically requires an unobstructed line of sight between transmitter and receiver.
Inonizing radation
is radiation composed of particles that individually carry enough energy to liberate an electron from an atom or molecule, ionizing it.
