- the concept of mental illness has been inflated by psychiatyr and needlessly medicalises human ecperiences

there isnt an agreed way of defining ‘mental disorders ‘ - the number of possible mental disorders has continually risen since 1952
over the 20th century there was an increased need for psychological testing
- honestly testing- who is lying?
- aptitude testing- is someone fit for a job
- health- how can we diagnose a disease
- early psychologist were confidently in the newfound credibility of psyhcology- not realising the complexity of the mind
