chapter 10 Flashcards
arguments that psychology is a scientific
- it uses the ‘scientific’ method
- it aligns with the natural sciences- it has historically adhered to the positivist paradigm
- ir produces results based on evidence
the logical arguement that brains are fundamentally biological objects
arguements that psych is not a science
the lack of definitive proof- the brain is so complex, psych cant definitivly prove much
psyhcology often deviates from the ‘scientific’ method
- cus of scienitfic methods, the disipline cant always adhere to a strictly scientific method
psyhcology hasnt found any universal laws
most psyhcologists arent researchers
humans are dynamic and complex objects
Dilthey (1833-1911)
what did he do
first key thinker to draw a distinction between naturla sciences and human sciences
argued that psyhchology should be content based at a time it was dominated by neurologists
focussed on the impotance of understanding, empathy and context
freud what did he do
diverted from the traditional scientific method, his theories are unfalsified
his ideas created one of the most powerful movements in the history of psyhcogy
rogers and maslow
what did they do
argues against behaviourism and psychoanalysis and argued for the importance of socio-cultural context
started the humanistic psyhcogy movement, a qualitative way of understanding human nature in psychotherapy
combined staistics with the humanistic approach to show the efficacy og humanistic psych therapy, still used today
key critiques of psych
focuses too much on the average person which neglects important individual differences
the key movements at the time govern which things are researched, often neglecting important issues
was (and still can be ) ethnocentric and sexist
been used as an excuse for insidious movements and actions
early psych tended to exagerate their claimes, even more so when psych became seen as a science
explain more on ehtnocentrism/sexism and incidious
psych tend to focus heavily on white western males- explicitly in the past due to colonialism and the traditional patriarchy, implicityl not due to publishing bias, sterotypes and societal racism.
psyhcology theories have been used as rationale for the eugenics movement in the us and the nazi germany and as evidence of POC and womne
the critical psyhcology movement
- shift focus towards idealism rather than realism
realises the limits of knowledge
examines the social- constructionist perpective
hacking argues for..
a social contructionist psychogy
our interactions with other huamns change them, so we can think of them as neural objects of scientific inquiry
living sciences cross boarders, they dont exist in isoloation
when we study humans we risk chnaging what we seek to study
hackings engines of social sciences
