Cross-Functional Team
A team consisting of employees in a company that does not have the usual supervision of a
manger.
Self-Directed Team
Where teams form to get work done virtually
Virtual Team
Where the group is newly formed.
Added new members.
Forming Stage
Positive feelings about the team.
Some anxiousness as team members may not
know their role in the team
Learning about other team members
Team is dependent on leader for guidance
Leader should be clear in this phase about goals
and provide direction
Forming Stage
Conflict may begin because team members have different
working styles
Storming Stage
Questioning team goals and authority
Competition among team members for status
Team members compete for acceptance of ideas
Can be a difficult stage for those who do not like conflict
The leader should focus on making sure team members listen to and respect one another
Storming Stage
Team members begin to accept one another and the strengths they bring to the team
Norming Stage
Respect for authority
Accepting differences in team members
Understanding of individual’s strengths
Focused on developing procedures in how
team will function
Trust
Leader should step aside as much as possible
Norming Stage
In this stage the team members work harmoniously
together.
Performing Stage
Clear vision
Everyone working together to meet goals
Structures and processes set up and accepted by
team members
No friction among team members
Team members are highly motivated
During this phase, the leader should step aside
and let the team perform
