Chapter 7 Solutions Flashcards
Suspension
A mixture in which particles of a material are more or less evenly dispersed throughout a liquid or gas
Colloid
.a mixture consisting of tiny particles that are intermediate in size between those in solutions and those in suspensions that are suspended in a liquid. Solid, or gas
Emulsion
.any mixture of two or more immiscible liquids in which one liquid is dispersed in the other
Solution
A homogenous mixture of two or more substances uniformly dispersed throughout a single phase
Solute
In a solution, the substance that dissolves in the solvent
Solvent
In a solution, the substance in which the solute dissolves
Alloy
A solid or liquid mixture of two or more metals
Heterogeneous mixture
A mixture of different substances that remain physically separate, more than one phase
Decanting
Gradually pour from one container into another without disturbing the sediment
Immiscible
No forming a homogeneous mixture when added together
Tyndall effect
Light scattering by particles in a colloid or else particles in a very fine suspension.
Polar compound
.a molecule that has an uneven distribution of elements
Hydrogen bonding
The intermolecular force occurring when a hydrogen atom that is bonded to a highly electronegative atom of one molecule is attracted to two unshared electrons of another molecule
Nonpolar compound
A compound whose electrons are equally distributed amount its atoms
Solubility
.the maximum amount of a solute that will dissolve in a given quantity of solvent at a given temperature and pressure
