Chapter 10 Motion Flashcards
Motion
Objects change of position according to a certain point
Reference point
Stationary object that helps detect motion
Displacement
An objects change in position
Speed
distance traveled divided by the time the motion takes place
Average speed
Distance traveled by an object divided by the time it takes the object to travel that distance
Instantaneous speed
Infinitely small time interval that speed in measured in
Velocity
The speed of an object traveling a certain direction
Resultant velocity
When you combine the velocity of two moving objects with in the other objects and their directions
Acceleration
Velocity changes over time. When speed, direction, or both change
Centripetal acceleration
Acceleration which occurs in uniform circular motion
Constant acceleration
When the velocity changes by the same amount over time intervals
Force
Action exerted on the body in order to change its state or rest or motion
Net force
Combination of all forces acting on an object
Balanced forces
When the net force of an object is zero. They do not cause an object to start moving when it is at rest.
Unbalanced forces
Has a net force greater than zero. Will move n the direction of the greater force
Friction
Two surfaces that are in contact with a forces that opposes motion between the two
Sliding friction
When two objects slide past one another
Rolling friction
When a circular object rolls on a flat surface rolling friction occurs
Fluid friction
When an object flows through a fluid the friction is called fluid friction
Static friction
Force that resists the sliding motion between two surfaces in constant and at rest
Kinetic friction
Force that opposes the movement of two surfaces in contains and slide over each other
