Chapter 2 Matter Flashcards
Chemistry
Changing raw materials into a different substance
Matter
Anything that takes up space and has mass; materials that you are able to touch and hold
Element
Made of atoms; cannot be separated or broken down using other chemicals
Atom
Smallest units; maintains properties of the element
Compound
Chemically combining of 2 or more different elements
Molecule
Keeps the physical and chemical properties of a substance
Chemical formula
Different chemical numbers and symbols used to represent a substance
Pure substance
Sample of matter that has a definite physical and chemical properties
Mixture
Different substances that are not chemically combined
Heterogeneous
Substances in a mixture that are not evenly distributed
Homogeneous
Evenly distributed and same throughout the mixture
Miscible
Substances that can be mixed
Immiscible
Substances that cannot be mixed
