Chapter 7 Part 1 (Nervous System) Flashcards
The CNS consists of?
Brain and Spinal cord
What is the peripheral nervous system (PNS)
System of nerves that connects the outlying parts of the body with the CNS
What is the general function if the CNS?
Transmit signals between the rest of the body
What are the two classifications of the PNS?
- Afferent (sensory)
- Efferent (motor branches)
What is the sensory divisions function of the PNS?
Send sensory input to the CNS from sensory receptors around the body
What is the motor divisions function of the PNS?
Send motor signals from the CNS to muscles or glands
What is a neuroglia (glial cell)?
A nonneural tissue of the CNS that performs supportive and other function
What are the functions if neuroglia?
Support, insulate and protect neurons
What is an astrocyte shape and function?
- Star shaped
- Form a barrier between capillaries and neurons
What is an microglia shape and function?
- Spider shaped
- Monitor health of nearby neurons and dispose of debris and bacteria
What is an ependymal shape and function?
- Cubes
- Circulate cerebrospinal fluid
What is an oligodrocytes function?
Produce fatty insulating coverings (myelin sheaths)
What is a neurons function?
Transmit messages throughout the body
What is a nerve pulse?
A self-propagating wave of depolarization (action potential)
What is a reflex arc?
Neural pathway for reflexes
List the events that lead to a nerve impulse
- resting membrane is polarized
- Stimulus initiates local depolarization
- Depolarization and generation of an action potential
- Propagation of the action potential
- Repolarization
- Initial ionic conditions a restored
What are the four major regions of the cerebral hemispheres?
- Frontal
- Parietal
- Temporal
- Occipital
The cerebral cortex is split into two ____.
Hemispheres
The right cerebral cortex hemisphere controls the ___ side of the body.
The left side of the body
The left cerebral cortex hemisphere controls the ___ side of the body.
The right side of the body
What is the frontal lobes functions?
- Voluntary movement
- Expressive language
- Higher level executive functions
What is the parietal lobe function?
Process somatosensory information
What is the temporal lobe function
Process auditory information
What is the occipital lobe function?
Process visual perception
What is the diencephalon function?
Primary relay and processing center for sensory information and autonomic control
What is the function of the brain stem?
regulate most of the body automatic functions that are essential for life
