Chapter 3 Part 2 (Cells and Tissues) Flashcards
What is epithelial tissue?
One of the primary tissues, covers the surface of the body and lines the body cavities, ducts and vessels.
What is epithelial tissue function?
- protection
- absorption
- filtration
What does stratified epithelium mean?
More than one cell layer
What is connective tissue?
Tissues that connect body parts
What is connective tissue function?
- Support
- Storage
- Protection
What is the extracellular matrix on connective tissues?
Nonliving material that separate the living cells
What are the connective tissue classes?
- Bone
- Cartilage
- Dense connective tissue
- Loose connective tissue
- Blood
Skeletal muscles can be controlled in which ways?
Voluntarily or consciously
What is cardiac muscle?
Specialized muscle of the heart with striations and intercalated discs. (Also involuntary)
Why is smooth muscle called “smooth?”
No striations are visible
What is fibrosis in wound healing?
Healing involving replacement of damaged tissue by dense connective tissue (scar tissue)
What are the steps for wound healing?
1, Inflammation
2. Granulation tissue forms
3. Regeneration and fibrosis effect permanent repair
