gathering, evaluating, understanding and interpreting information to predict the colors for the upcoming seasons

Color palette
a range of colors (can range from a few to many)
Color story
a palette of colors used to identify, organize and connect ideas and products
Color theory
the study of color and its meaning in the worlds of art and design
Color wheel / color circle
a visual representation of colors arranged according to their chromatic relationship
- Developed by Sir Isaac Newton in 1706
Primary colors
colors of their basic essence (cannot be made by mixing anything else together)
Secondary colors
a mixture of two secondary colors
Tertiary colors
a mixture of primary and secondary hues
Analogous colors
located close together on the wheel
Complementary colors
located opposite each other on a color wheel
Hue
the color itself
Value
the lightness or darkness of color
Intensity
the saturation or brightness of the color
Tint
a hue that has white added
Shade
a hue of black added
Tone
has grey added into it
Color scheme
a group of colors in relation to each other
Monochromatic colors schemes
two or more colors form one hue
Neutral color schemes
white, black, grey, brown and cream (don’t appear on the wheel)
Psychology of colors
focuses of the effects related to mood, emotions, feelings , memories and behaviors
Color preferences
tendencies for a person or a group to be partial to some colors over others
Cool colors
blues, greens, or purples – can. Be calming and pacifying
Warm colors
reds, oranges and yellows – can be calming and pacifying
Temperature
a way of describing color and the emotions certain colors incite

Yellow – joy and happiness, sunshine and cheerfulness, wisdom
Orange – mix of yellow and red: energy of red and joy of yellow
Citrus orange – healing and healthy colors
Golden orange – wealth and luxury
Red – energy, fire, and blood, danger or action, love
China - prosperity
Pink – feminine
India – brides
Green – nature, growth and fertility, balance and wellbeing
U.S. – money
Asia – healing and protective powers
Blue – ocean and sky, inspiration, loyalty and faith
Purple – inspiration and imagination, royalty and luxury, magical and mystical color
Light purple /lilac – romantic
Brown – color of earth, promotes stability and order
Black – power and evil, mystery and fear, the color of death, worn for formal or elegant occasions
White – purity and goodness, cleanliness and safety, innocence and virginity
China – purity

How to Develop a Color Forecast (the 4 steps)
Step 1: Formulate color ideas
• Research: scientific and artistic approaches
• Collect data – most sampled and request colors from the color service and mills
• Observe: media, runways and streets, political, economic and lifestyle trends
• Companies or events for color references:
- Pantone inc.
- Premiere vision
- CAUS (Color association of the United States)
Step 2: Develop a color story
- Collect colors for the color story
- Swatches of fabric
- Yarns
- Paint chips
- Magazine clips
- Items from nature
- Colors from packaging
- Select colors to represent the intended messages of the theme
Step 3: Edit, interpret and analyze
Step 4: Assign color names
