Chapter 7: BioRisk Management Flashcards
It refers to anything in the environment that has the potential to CAUSE HARM.
Hazard
The possibility that SOMETHING or UNPLEASANT will happen.
Risk
The risk associated with BIOLOGICAL TOXINS or INFECTIOUS AGENTS.
Biorisk
The integration of BIOSAFETY and BIOSECURITY to MANAGE RISK when working with biological toxins and infectious agents.
Biorisk Management
The INITIAL STEP in implementing a biorisk MANAGEMENT PROCESS.
Risk Assessment
What are the following steps of Risk Assessment?
- Define the situation
- Define the risks
- Characterize the risks
- Determine if risks are acceptable or not
The ACTIONS and MITIGATION measures that are put into place to reduce or eliminate the risks associated with biological agents and toxins.
Mitigation Procedures
It provides the HIGHEST DEGREES OF RISK REDUCTION. Involves the total decision not to work with a specific biological agent or even not doing the intended work.
Elimination
It is a REPLACEMENT of a procedure or biological agent with a similar entity in order to reduce risks.
Substitution
It includes physical changes in WORK STATIONS, EQUIPMENT, PRODUCTION FACILITIES, or any other relevant aspect of the work environment that can reduce or PREVENT EXPOSURE TO HAZARD.
Engineering Control
It refers to the POLICIES, STANDARDS, and GUIDELINES used to control risks.
Administrative Control
The DEVICE WORN by workers to protect them against chemicals, toxins, and pathologic hazards in the laboratory.
Personal Protective Equipment (PPE)
It involves a SYSTEMATIC PROCESS intended to achieve organizational objectives and goals.
Performance of Evaluation
It is simply a REEVALUATION of the overall mitigation strategy.
