Chapter 2: Defining the Practice of Medical Technology / Clinical Laboratory Science Profession Flashcards
It is known as Republic Act 5527.
Medical Technology Act of 1969
He or she is engaged in the WORK OF MEDICAL TECHNOLOGY.
Medical Technologist
He or she is engaged in the COLLECTION OF BLOOD.
Phlebotomist
It is the year when R.A. 5527 was approved.
1969
He or she is a graduate of MEDICAL TECHNOLOGY with a board rating lower than 74.9%
Medical Technician
He asserts that “technology is a design for instrumental action that reduces the uncertainty in the cause-effect relationships involved in achieving a desired outcome.”
Rogers 1983
It is designed to improve the detection, diagnosis, treatment and monitoring of diseases.
Medical Technology
It plays an important role in the detection, diagnosis, and treatment of diseases.
Clinical Laboratory Testing
There are involved in the examination and sis of body fluids, tissues, and cells.
Clinical Laboratory Scientists
He made the original version
Dr. Nardito Moraleta
He made the revised version
Prof. Rodolfo Rabor
A medical technologist must be capable of
performing the MOST BASIC to the most advanced laboratory tests. It is capable of PERFORMING HEMATOLOGIC, MICROBIOLOGICAL, SEROLOGIC, CHEMICAL, and other procedures in different areas of laboratory science.
Perform Clinical Laboratory Testing
Medical technologists are also expected to PERFORM SPECIAL PROCEDURES in diagnosing disease these may include the operation of advanced diagnostic equipment.
Examples:
Special procedures: molecular and nuclear diagnostics
Perform Special Procedures
He or she should act according to the Medical Technology profession of CODE OF ETHICS and his or her PLEDGE OATH OF PRACTICE.
Be honest in Practice
A medical technologist must be aware of the urgency of delivering results on time especially in cases that require urgent treatment. Medical Technologists should be fully alert to fully address the needs of the patient.
Example:
One should take notations on “STAT”
Ensure Timely Delivery of Results
ACCURACY AND PRECISION impact the interpretation of results by the physician to PROVIDE PROPER MEDICATION in the treatment of disease.
Ensure Accuracy and Precision of Results
The medical technologist must be able to perform his/her functions according to the professional CODE OF ETHICS FOR MEDICAL TECHNOLOGY PROFESSIONALS. Should be aware of the LAWS AND REGULATIONS and should NOT exploit its function beyond its boundaries.
Demonstrate Professionalism
Clinical laboratory act 1966
R.A. 4688
Blood banking acts of 1956 and 1995
R.A. 1517 & R.A 7719
ENSURING CONFIDENTIALITY of patient information is one of the core duties within the medical practice. Confidentiality requires healthcare providers to keep a patient’s PERSONAL HEALTH INFORMATION private unless the patient consents to release the information.
Uphold Confidentiality
A medical technology professional is required to collaborate with other healthcare practitioners in ORDER TO BUILD A WELL-FUNCTIONING TEAM.
Collaborate with Other Health Care Professionaals
Practicing medical technologists must also be
engaged in RESEARCH ACTIVITIES to update their skills.
Conduct Research
Medical technologists SHOULD NOT BE CONFINED ONLY to the four corners of their
clinical laboratories
Involvement in Health Promotions Program
It is a duly REGISTERED PHYSICIAN who is specially trained in methods of laboratory medicine, or the gross and microscopic study and interpretation of tissues, secretions, and excretions of the human body.
Pathologist
A person CERTIFIED BY and registered with the Board of MEDICAL TECHNOLOGY and
QUALIFIED TO ASSIST a MEDICAL TECHNOLOGIST and/or qualified pathologist in the practice of medical technology.
Medical Laboratory Technicians
An individual trained to draw blood either for
laboratory tests or for BLOOD DONATIONS.
Phlebotomists
Laboratory personnel who works with the
pathologist to DETECT CHANGES IN THE BODY CELLS which may be important in the early diagnosis of disease.
Cytotechnologists
Laboratory personnel responsible for the
routine preparation, processing, and staining of BIOPSIES AND TISSUE SPECIMEN for microscopic examination by pathologists
Histotechnologists
Laboratory personnel apply their knowledge
of RADIATION PHYSICS and safety regulations to limit RADIATION EXPOSURE, prepare and administer radiopharmaceuticals, and use radiation detection devices.
Nuclear Medical Technologists
Laboratory personnel studies the effects of TOXIC SUBSTANCES on the physiological functions of human beings, animals, and plants to develop data for use in consumer
protection and industry safety programs.
Toxicologists
