Chapter 6-Water and dietary fibre Flashcards
What are the five functions of water
- regulation of body temperature
- essential chemical reactions
- transportation of nutrients and gases
- remove of wastes
- lubrication of body parts
Elaboration for regulating body temperature
water helps regulate body temperature by helping the body lose heat by cooling it down when sweat evaporates
Elaboration essential chemical reactions
water-soluble vitamins must solute into water so that they ca undergo their chemical processes and benefit the body
Elaboration for transportation of nutrients and gases
water is a major component of blood which contains haemoglobin that transports oxygen around the body
Elaboration for removal of wastes( water)
urea a water soluble waste is removed from the body due water and it also helps softens stool removing wastes from the body
Elaboration for lubricating body parts
fluids in the body are mostly made up of water. these fluids acts as lubricants in the body like synovial fluid which lubricates joints
5 food sources of water
watermelon, soya bean milk, plain yoghurt, orange juice and milk
What should you not drink in place of water for hydration
sweet drinks or coffee or alcohol or salty soups
What are diuretics
diuretics are substances that increase the rate of water excretion from the body through urination
Why does food high in sodium tend to increase thirstiness
soups with excess sodium leads to thirst more as more water will be required to excrete the excess dietary sodium via urination.
Why are sweetened drinks not a good replacement of water
They are high in sugar and might lead to other problems like diabetes
What are the factors affecting the amount of water needed by a person
- state of health
- diet
- environment
- level of physical activity
Elaboration for state of health
fever, vomitting and diarrohea can cause water to be lost from the body so people with such sickness should take in more water to replace the water lost
Elaboration for diet
a person who has a diet high in diuretics or dietary fibre or salt must take in more water. a person with diet high in dieuretics loses a lot of water as they urinate more. Someone with a diet high in dietary fibre needs more water to soften their stools. Someone with a diet high in salt should take in more water as water is required to remove excess sodium via urine
Elaboration for environment
in a hot environment a person tends to lose more water through prespiration to keep them from overheating so more water is required to replenish the water lost
