Chapter 6-The Circulatory System Flashcards
1
Q
Blood functions
A
- Transports food, waste, hormones
- maintains body temperature
- transports oxygen
- fights infection
2
Q
Plasma
A
- ochre/yellow colour
- transports dissolved chemicals eg. Urea, Co2, hormones
- body cells heat up when working-> plasma keeps temperature at 37*
3
Q
Red Blood Cells
A
- made in bone -marrow
- contains haemoglobin (red)(made by iron)(carries oxygen)
4
Q
White blood cells
A
- made in bone marrow
- fights infection by surrounding bacteria+viruses+fungi and destroying them
- produces proteins called antibodies destroy microorganisms
5
Q
AIDS
A
-Condution where body cannot produce antibodies
6
Q
Platelets
A
- formed in bone marrow
- clot blood
- prevent loss of blood+micro organisms entering body
7
Q
Arteries
A
- Carry blood away from the heart
- strong flow (high pressure)
- strong, thick walls
- small lumen
- no backflow (no valves)
8
Q
Veins
A
- carry blood to heart
- low pressure
- thin weak walls
- valves
- large lumen
9
Q
Lumen
A
Space in blood vessel as a ratio to thickness of wall
10
Q
Capillaries
A
- tiny blood vessls
- found between arteries+veins
- huge amount in the body
- very, very,very thin walls
- allow materials to pass in and out
11
Q
Average adult bpm
A
70bpm
12
Q
Heart
A
- cardiac muscle->doesn’t tire easily
- septum separates 2 sides
- 4 chambers (top=atria, bottom=ventricles)
- valves- stop blood from going in wrong direction
13
Q
Valves
A
Stop blood from going in wrong direction
14
Q
Septum
A
Seperate S two sides of heart
15
Q
Blood components
A
- plasma
- red blood cells
- White blood cells
- platelets
