Chapter 14- Plant Reproduction Flashcards
Name the two ways of reproduction.
Sexual and asexual
What way of reproductions of Strawberries use, and how do they use it?
Asexual, they send a a runner above the ground, this makes a new plant beside the parent plant, which grows up identically.
What is sexual reproduction?
The joining of a male and female sex cell (gametes) to form a zygote.
Why do plants have flowers?
For reproduction
Name the parts of a flower:
Sepal, petals, carpel, stamen,
What part of the carpel does the pollen land on?
The stigma
Which part of the carpel connects the stigma to the ovary?
The style
What is the bottom part of the carpel? What does it contain?
The ovary,
One or more ovules
What does a stamen contain, and what do these parts do?
Anther: Produces pollen
Filament: supports the anther high in the flower
Name the five stages of sexual production in a plant:
- Pollination
- fertilisation
- seed/ fruit formation
- seed/ fruit dispersal
- germination
What is pollination?
The transfer of pollen from a stamen to a carpel.
What are the two forms of pollination?
Wind pollination
Insect pollination
What is fertilisation?
The joining of the male and female gametes to form zygotes.
What allows the male gamete to get to the female gamete?
The pollen tube
What is reproduction?
The formation of new individuals.
Make part of a flower and its function
Stamen
To produce pollen grains
Name the two parts in the stamen
Filament-holds anther high to get pollen out
Anther- makes pollen grains
4 types of dispersal
Wind dispersal
Animal dispersal
Self dispersal
Water dispersal
Wind dispersal
- small seeds
- sometimes have special features eg. Feathery tufts and wings
Animal dispersal
Two ways
- Animals eat them, then shit them out eg. Raspberry
- Seeds stick to them for a while, eventually land somewhere else eg. Goose grass (spiky brown balls)
Self dispersal
Pod bursts open eg. Beans, peas
Water dispersal
Seeds p/fruit able to float, can be taken by streams etc.
Eg. Coconut, lilies
Features neccesary for germination
Water
Oxygen
Warmth
She’ll of seed
Testa
What are the two parts of a plant embryo (found in germinating seed)
Plumule (new shoot)
Radicle (new roots)
