Describe the factor: function, give an example
The properties of a textile must suit its function eg. A tea should be able to absorb water
Describe the factor: cost, give an example
The amount of money available may influence the type and quality of textiles chosen for the home eg. A well used object, you should save to buy a good quality product
Describe the factor: durability , give an example
Textiles used in the home generally need to be heard wearing
Eg. The fabric on a sofa need to to be able to withstand people constantly sitting on it
Describe the factor(s): colour, pattern & style
The C,P&S of textiles chosen for the home should complement the colour scheme and style of the room they are in
Describe the factor: ease of care give an example
Textiles that are used often must be washable
Textiles people sit on should be **stain resistant **
Textiles that don’t see much wear and tear ( eg.curtains ) can be **dry clean only **
Describe the factor: sustainability and ecological issues , give an example
Issues such as the impact of of textiles choices on the environment, animal welfare and the welfare of textile workers should be considered
What is the law on fire safety regarding textiles ?
Textiles must be fire-resistant
What type of textile is fire-safety super important for?
Upholstered items
What must all foam padding in upholstered be in regards to for safety ?
Fire retardant
What must all upholstered furniture come with?
Either a green or red swing label
What is a green swing label?
Flame retardant finish’s are applied to the outer covering fabric to make it fire resistant
What is a red swing label?
The outer covering fabric is not is not flame resistant but their is a layer of flame-resistant fabric underneath
What is the definition of ecological issues?
Issues that relate to how living things, particularly humans, interact with and impact on their environment
What are synthetic materials made from?
Fossil fuels
What does the production of these synthetic materials harm? What does this cause?
The environment, which causes air and water pollution
What is used nowadays in the production of textile crops?
Chemical pesticides
What do chemical pesticides cause ( harm )?
Water pollution
What do chemical dyes contaminate?
Water supply
What are chemical dyes used for?
Dye fabrics such as denim

They are transported by air or sea, causing air pollution
