Chapter 6: Skin And Membranes Flashcards
Epithelial Membrane
Tissues: cutaneous membrane (skin), serous membranes (inside w/ organs-acts as a jacket of protection), and mucous membranes.
Definition: composed of epithelial tissue and an underlying of fibrous connective tissue.
Cutaneous Membrane
Primary organ of the integumentary system; the skin.
Serous Membanes
A two-layered epithelial membrane that lines body cavities and covers the surfaces of organs.
Mucous Membranes
Epithelial membranes that line body surfaces opening directly to the exterior and secrete a thick, slippery material called mucus.
Structure of the Skin
The two primary layers consist of the epidermis and dermis.
Epidermis
Is the outermost layer of the skin. It is relatively a thin sheet of stratified squamous epithelial.
Dermis
Is the deeper of the two layers. It is thicker than the epidermis and is made up largely of connective tissue.
The Functions of the Skin
Protection, temperature regulation, sense organ activity, excretion, and synthesis of vitamin D.
Arrector Pili Muscle
Smooth muscles of the skin that are attached to hair follicles; when contraction occurs, the hair stands up, resulting in “goose flesh”.
Parietal Pleura
Serous membrane that lines the walls of the left and right pleural cavities within the thoracic cavity.
