Chapter 4: Tissues Flashcards
Tissue Types
Epithelial, connective, muscle, and nervous.
White Fat
Area under skin; padding at various points.
Brown Fat
Pockets within the white fat of the neck and torso.
Skeletal Muscle Tissue (voluntary)
Attaches to bones.
Cardiac Muscle Tissue (involuntary)
Composes heart wall.
Smooth Muscle Tissue (involuntary or visceral)
Walls of tubular viscera of digestive, respiratory, and genitourinary tracts.
Walls of blood vessels and large lymphatic vessels.
Ducts of glands.
Intrinsic eye muscle (iris and ciliary body)
Arrector muscles of hairs.
Nervous Tissue
Two types of Nerve cells (neurons): Axon and dendrites.
Special connecting and supporting cells.
Brain, spinal cord, and nerves.
Simple Squamous (Epithelial Tissue)
Loc: Alveoli of lungs and lining of blood and lymphatic vessels.
Func: Diffusion of respiratory gases between alveolar; also, diffusion, filtration, and osmosis.
Stratified Squamous (Epithelial Tissue)
Loc: Surface of lining of mouth and esophagus; also, the surface lining of skin (epidermis).
Func: Protection.
Simple Columnar (Epithelial Tissue)
Loc: Surface layer of lining of stomach, intestines, and parts of the respiratory tract.
Func: Protection, secretion, and absorption.
Stratified Transitional (Epithelial Tissue)
Loc: Urinary bladder.
Func: :Protection.
Pseudostratified (Epithelial Tissue)
Loc: Surface of lining of trachea.
Func: Protection.
Simple Cuboidal (Epithelial Tissue)
Loc: Glands; kidney tubules.
Func: Secretion and absorption.
Areolar (Connective Tissue)
Loc: Area between other tissues and organs (fascia).
Func: Connection
Adipose (White and Brown Fat) / (Connective Tissue)
Loc: Under skin
Func: Protection, and insulation.
