Chapter 6: Glaciers and Deserts Flashcards
A think mass of ice that forms over land from the compaction and crystallization of snow, and shows evidence of past or present flow, is called what?
A Glacier
What two cycles are glaciers a part of?
- hydrologic cycle
2. rock cycle
Three types of glaciers
1) Valley or Alpine Glaciers: form in mountains; relatively small
2) Ice Sheets or Continental Glaciers: large scale; can be several miles thick!
3) Ice Caps
What type of glacier covers Greenland and Antarctica?
Ice sheets (largest glacier) Greenland = 1.6 miles thick Antarctica = 2.7 miles thick
Two types of glacial movements?
1) Plastic flow (within the ice)
2) Slipping along the ground surface
Anatomy of a Glacier Zones?
A) Zone of Fracture
uppermost area. crevasses located here.
B) Zone of Accumulation
where glacier grows. ice and snow accumulate here.
C) Zone of Wastage
net loss due to melting.
Landforms created by glacial erosion?
A) Glacial Trough B) Hanging Valley C) Cirque D) Arete E) Horn F) Fjord
Glacial Trough
v-shaped valley created from streams into a u-shaped valley by ice
Hanging Valley
`valley of tributary glaciers left hanging above main trunk glacier
A bowl shaped depression with walls on 3 sides, is called what?
Cirque
Sinuous, sharp-edged ridges formed from creation of several cirques on either side of valley, is called what?
Arete
A pyramid-like peak formed from creation of several cirques close together, is called what?
Horn
A deep, steep-sided ocean-flooded glacial valley, is called what?
Fjord
What is a Moraine?
depositional layers or ridges of glacial till (ground up rock)
The role of water in arid climates?
streams are dry most of the time.
only flow is during time of rainfall
