tests for presence of enzymes and bilirubin in the blood
performed on blood serum
What are stool cultures used for?
tests for microorganisms in feces
What is a stool guaic or hemoccult test?
test to detect blood in feces
What do X-ray tests use?
contrast medium to visualize a specific area of the digestive system
What are lower gastrointestinal series (barium enema) X-rays?
X-rays of the colon and rectum obtained after infection of barium into the rectum
What are upper gastrointestinal series X-rays?
X-rays of the esophagus, stomach, and small intestine obtained after administering barium by the mouth
What is a cholangiography?
X-rays of the biliary system performed after injection of contrast into the bile ducts

series of xray images that are taken in multiple views like cross section
What is abdominal ultrasonography?
sound waves beamed into the abdomen to produce an image of abdominal viscera
useful for fluid filled structures like the gallbladder
What is endoscopic ultrasonography?
use of endoscope combined with ultrasound to examine the organs of the GI tract
What is magnetic resonance imaging (MRI)?
magnetic waves produce images of organs and tissue in all three planes of the body
What is a HIDA scan?
radioactive imaging procedure that tracts the production and flow of bile from the liver and gallbladder to the intestine
tests to see how well the gallbladder is functioning
