What is a legacy?
Something that has been passed on by those who have lived in the past
What are some examples of legacies?
Political structures, parliamentary democracy, building and monuments, houses of worship
What is a common example of a legacy from the past?
Language
What does Ethnocentrism mean?
A way of thinking that centres on one’s own race and cultures
What is an example in early Canada when the British were Ethnocentric?
When they looked down on people who emigrated from non-British countries such as Ukraine and China
What is Eurocentrism?
A form of Ethnocentrism that uses European characteristics to judge others and their cultures
What is an example of Europeans being Eurocentric in Canada?
R.B. Bennet, who was a prime minister of Canada, said Canada should remain a white man’s country.
What did Europeans do to avoid conflicts in Africa?
They met in Berlin, Germany to divide the continent amongst themselves
Why di Europeans divide up Africa?
To avoid conflicts, protect trade routes, and gain control of the natural resources
What did Congolese people believe white people were when they took over the Congo?
Ghosts because they were white
What did King Leopold do to the people of the Congo?
He forced them to give up their lives to harvest rubber because the demand for it was growing
What did King Leopold do to those in the Congo who resisted?
He cut off their hand, feet, or ears
How did King Leopold attempt to not let news of the atrocities that he did escape from the country?
His employees were forbidden to leave and news reporters were forbidden to enter. He also bribed new teams to write positive stories
Why did the change of power of Congo not help?
Because the representative became puppets and in exchange collected money for their cooperation

The majority of the Europeans were of english descent

The forced migration of African slaves

When people were sold to work for a period of time over seas and after they finished their service they remained in the land

They made hunting buffalo more efficient

They used guns to meet the demand for buffalo hides

They formed a military and mostly employed white people but also employed Indians called Sepoys

When British officially took control of India

When the British banned all Indian fabric from India which was their main source of thriving economy

The large train station in Mumbai that was named after Queen Victoria

Because they wanted to create one country for Hindus (India) and one country for Muslims (Pakistan)

A country called Bangladesh

Because people believed that he weakened India

Both countries wanted it and they went to war over it and there was some concern over nuclear weapons
