HOPS

- inspect bilaterally for a comparison
palpation
- touching injured area and surrounding tissues, as well as the contralateral side
- uninjured side 1st
special tests
- various testing procedures used to examine, rule out, and confirm the extent of injury
- test vital signs, ROM, MMT
Means to move an injured patient
ambulatory assistance, manual conveyance, and spine board transport
RICE
Rest, Ice, Compression, and Elevation
rest
utilizing splints, triangular bandages, crutches, or canes
ice
- Decreases nerve conduction, which decreases pain signals to the brain
- Acts as an anesthetic and decreases capillary permeability and vasodilation, which in turn may decrease swelling
- typically 5-20 miutes
