Capillaries
+smallest and most numerous of the three types of blood vessels
+most common type of bleeding; appears red
+blood seeps out slowly
veins
+rare; occurs during severe injuries
+exits in steady blow; darker red
arteries

+brighter red; shoots out w/ each heart beat
external bleeding
blood exits body
Internal bleeding
when a blood vessel is damaged and releases blood inside the body
open wound
cut in skin thru which external bleeding occurs
abrasion
occur when skin comes in contact w/ surface or an object that rubs against the skin
incision
open wounds that appear to have smooth edges
laceration
similar to incisions bc they may be superficial or deep, w/ minimal or immense bleeding
puncture
when an object, such as a splinter or knife, penetrates the skin
avulsion
wounds w/ skin torn and some tissue actually ripped off
amputation
occur when a significant traumatic force entirely cuts off a body part
open wound infection
+improper initial treatment and inappropriate continuing care of a wound
+signs and symptoms: pus discharge, swelling, redness, pain, general body fatigue, and fever
tetanus Infection
+life threatening; w/in 1-3 wks 1st sign of infection
+signs: lockjaw, fever, sweating, irritability, muscle spasms
Proper 1st Aid
- stop bleeding w/ direct pressure
