Chapter 56 Flashcards
What are the 3 levels of Biodiversity?
Genetic Diversity
Species Diversity
Ecosystem
Endagered species vs threatened species
Endangered–> in danger of becoming extinct throughout all or a significant portion ofits range
threatened–> likely to become endangered in the future
What are the 4 major threats to Biodiversity
habitat loss
invasive species
overexploitation
climate change
Overexploitation= killing too many of them to rebound
What is an extinction vortex
When a small population is vulnerable to inbreeding
and genetic drift, which can draw the population down an
extinction vortex toward smaller and smaller population
size until no individuals survive.
low genetic variation causes it
What is minimum viable population
The minimum population size a species needs to survive
What is critical load`
amount of added nutrient that can be absorbed by plants without damaging the ecosystem
