What were the three main social classes in early Chinese society?
Landowning aristocrats, peasant farmers, merchants
What is a social class?
A group of individuals who share a similar position in society.
What is filial piety?
Family members have to respect their parents and older relatives. The needs and desires of the head of the family are placed before their own.
Why did the amount of land owned by each aristocrat decrease overtime?
Each aristocrat divided his land among his sons. As a result sons and grandsons owned much less property then their fathers and grandfathers had owned.
How did farmers in ancient China increase the amount of productive farmland?
They practiced terrace farming which is still used in China today
What three farming methods help farmers in ancient China grow more food?
They used terrace farming, bronze and iron tools, and insects birds and frogs for pest control
What were the three major theories about how to create a peaceful society in ancient China?
Confucianism, Daoism and legalism
Who was Confucius?
Confucius was ancient China’s first great thinker and future. He wanted it and the problems in China and bring peace to society.
What is taoism?
Another Chinese philosophy of that promotes a healthy society. Taoism is based on the teaching of Laozi.Dallas believe that people should give up worldly desires and turned your nature and the Dell or force that guides all living things.
What is legalism?
A Chinese philosophy developed by a scholar named Hanfeizi that taught people need a system of laws because they are naturally evil. The government needed to issue harsh laws since their punishments to force people to do their duty
Why did Hanfeizi believe that people needed laws and punishments?
He believed humans were naturally evil and that government need to DSU harsh laws and stiff punishments to force them to do their duty
Which philosophy encourage his followers to concentrate on duty and humanity?
Confucianism
