Marxism
A Marxist ideal of a classless and stateless utopian society in which all property is commonly owned and each person is paid according to his or her abilities and needs
Communism
An economic system based upon governmental or communal ownership of the means of production and distribution of goods and services
Socialism
An economic system in which capital assets are privately owned, the prices, production, and distribution of goods and services are determined by competition within a free market
Capitalism
Who is Karl Marx?
- A German revolutionary who fled to England
- Did not make a living by physical labor
- Claimed to understand the laborer’s views
Who is Friedrich Engels
- Friend and coauthor of The Communist Manifesto
- Earned his money from his father’s factory
The practice of federal government taking ownership and management control of private business
State Capitalism
History is the struggle in which communism is inevitable
Economic Determinism
The belief that only the material world exists and that class struggles are the mechanism behind social and economic progress
Dialectical Materialism
Those who own the means of production (property owners)
Bourgeoisie
The working class wage earner who does not own the means of production (property-less workers)
Proletariat
What is awareness of our oppressed state?
Class consciousness
The belief that whatever advances the proletariat and communism is morally good, and whatever hinders the proletariat and communism is morally evil
