Chapter 5: Enzymes Flashcards
What is catalyst?
a substance that increases the rate of a chemical reaction and is not changed by the reaction
What is a protein?
Proteins that are involved in all metabolic reactions, where they function as biological catalysts
Why are enzymes important?
They control the reaction rate necessary to sustain life
Enzyme action
Substrate approaches enzyme’s active site
-Molecules bind together forming enzyme-substrate complex
-Enzyme-substrate specificity—lock and key
-Enzyme releases reaction products
-Enzyme unchanged and can repeat process
Optimum temperature/ PH
the ph/temp which the enzyme works best at
opt pH: 7
opt temp:37C
Explain the effect of changes in temperature on enzyme activity
As the temperature increases, the kinetic energy also increases, enhancing the frequency and effectiveness of collisions between enzyme and substrate, leading to an increased rate of reaction. However, extremely high temperatures cause enzymes to denature.
Effect of changes in pH on enzyme
Extreme of pH affect the shape of enzymes, denaturing them.
