Chapter 5 Flashcards
Why is the primary visual cortex often referred to as the striate cortex?
There are signals that carry information form the LGN to the V1. Because axons carrying signals from LGN are myelinated while axons in the primary visual cortex are not, there are lines that are visible to the naked eye. They often form striates (stripes)
primary visual cortex cells are comprised of 2 types of cells. What are they
simple and complex
simple: respond to a line at a preferred orientation and PARTICULAR location in a receptive field
complex: respond to a line of preferred orientation at ANY location in a receptive field
which cells are orientation sensitive but location insensitive
complex cells
blobs
important for processing sensory input relating to color
