Anatomic position
Upright, facing front, arms at sides, palms forward and feet parallel.
Frontal/coronall plane
Made at right angles to the midline and divides the body into anterior (face, stomach, quads, knees, etc.) and posterior (back of head, back, butt, calves etc.)
Sagittal plane
Divides body into halves, right and left sides but does not have to be equal sides.
Medial plane, midsagittal plane
A plane that divides the body into right and left sides that passes directly through the midline to create equal sides.
Transverse plane
Divides the body horizontally to create superior and inferior parts.
Cranial cavity
Contains dorsal cavity and brain

Contains spinal cord
Thoracic cavity
Ventral cavity above diaphragm (chest cavity)
Abdominal cavity
Large ventral cavity below diaphragm and pelvic cavity
Diaphragm
Large muscle used in the function of breathing
Pelvic cavity
Ventral cavity below the abdominal cavity
Abdominopelvic cavity
Large ventral cavity between diaphragm and pelvis that includes the abdominal and pelvic cavities
Peritoneum
Large membrane that lines the abdominopelvic cavity and covers the organs within it.
Epigastric
Region above stomach
Umbilical
Navel region
Hypogastric
Region below stomach
Hypochondriac
Right and left regions near root of ribs
Lumbar
Left and Right regions near small of the back
Iliac
Left and Right regions of the hip and groin
Anterior
Toward the belly of the body
Ventral
Toward the belly of the body
Posterior
Toward the back of the body
Dorsal
Toward the back of the body
Medial
Toward the midline of the body
Lateral
Toward the side of the body
Proximal
Nearer to point of attachment reference point
Distal
Farther from point of attachment or reference point
