When adding a suffix to a root ending in ‘x’ what is the ‘x’ changed to?
- If there is a consonant before the ‘x’ –> a ‘g’
Ex. Pharynx –> adding ‘eal’ = Pharyngeal - If there is a vowel before the ‘x’ –> a ‘c’
Ex. Thorax –> adding ‘ic’ = Thoracic
When adding a suffix starting with ‘rh’ to a root?
The ‘r’ is doubled.
Ex. hem/o (blood) + ‘rhage’ (bursting forth of blood) = Hemorrhage
If a vowel has no mark over the letter?
Short pronunciation.
Ex. a –> hat o –> not
e –> met u –> run
i –> bin
If a vowel has a line over the letter?
Long pronunciation. (sounds like saying the letter)
Ex. ā –> say ō –> hose
ē –> tea ū –> sue
