Chapter 5 Flashcards
Computer storage
the variety of ways a computer system can store (save) data and information
Tangible property
things like desks, computers, tractors, etc. that can be stored on a computer or at least records of it like maintenance records or pictures
Intellectual property
the legal claim that a business has to names, inventions, and ideas. can include a boundless amount of ideas or concepts like lyrics, legal contracts, corporate secrets, policies, procedures, profiles and work history, etc.
Risk assessment
Unicode
computing system language that supports international languages like Chinese or Japanese that require use of special characters
read/write head
scan across the surface of a spinning disk to record and or access data and information
track
a concentric band around the disk that is divided into pie shaped wedges called sectors
Cluster
more than one sector
Floppy disk
a very thin flexible magnetic storage disk that rotates inside a square plastic shell
Hard disk drive
a storage device that stores data on rapidly rotating platters with magnetic surfaces
Flash memory/USB flash thumb drive (non volatile)
a technology that is primarily used in memory cards for digital cameras and thumb drives
Compact disk
CDs used to store digital data audio only
DVD
optical disk that is used for data storage but more common for high definition storage
Magnetic tape
old data storage media packaged on reel to reel cartridges like cassette tapes
RAID
redundant array of inexpensive disks, a series or stacked spinning hard disk platters connected to one another that divide and replicate data and information to provide more reliable storage
mass storage
storage of large amounts of data and information
Cloud storage
essentially a hard drive that resides on the internet like dropbox, icloud, etc.
Capacity
refers to the amount of data and information a storage device can hold
Access time
refers to the amount of time needed to get data and information from a storage device to its user
Holographic storage
stores information in a 3 dimensional photopolymer
Molecular storage
is very small and relies upon special chemicals to change the state of a singular molecule from a positive to a negative charge
Archiving
when data that is no longer used on a daily basis is stored electronically because it may need to accessed in the future
data backup
the copying of computer files that can be stored in the event that the original files are lost
Cost
a major consideration when selecting a storage device and strategy
Location
the location of a backup device is critical
data security
many large organizations rely on a third party contractor who specializes in mass storage to backup and store their data and information
Disaster recovery
when a business suffers a disaster and must regain critical control of their company which entails regaining access to their critical data and information
Disaster Recovery plans (DRPs)
critical plans that need to be in place to anticipate disasters and to outline what needs to be done when they occur
