Chapter 5 Flashcards
What is a triglyceride?
3 fatty acid molecules + 1 glycerol molecule
What is a lipid and what are the three types?
A fat
Triglycerides
Phospholipids
Sterols
What is a saturated fatty acid?
Hydrogen atoms surrounding every carbon in the chain
Solid at room temp
Butter lard animal products
What is a mono saturated fatty acid?
1 double bond lack 1 hydrogen atom
Not solid at room temp
Olive oil peanut oil plant products
What dose cis mean?
Same side of the carbon
What dose trans mean?
Opposite sides of the carbon
What is hydrogenation?
How trans fats are made
When a hydrogen atom is added to an unsaturated fatty acid
What dose it mean if a fatty acid is essential?
Our body dose not make it and we need to get it from the food we eat.
What are examples of essential fatty acids?
Omega 6 (pro inflammatory) found is in vegetables, soy, and flax seeds [good fat]
and omega 3 (anti inflammatory) found in fish and fish oil
What is a phospholipid?
Used to break down bile
Found in many cell membranes
What is sterol
A type of cholesterol
Where is bile produced and stored?
Produced by the liver
Stored in the gallbladder
What dose bile do?
It emulsifies fat (make smaller)
What is a micell?
A combination of fat and bile (the product)
What dose a lipoprotein do?
Transports lipids for absorption
