Chapter 49 Flashcards
1
Q
What is stereognosis?
A
a sense of recognizing the size, shape, and texture of an object
2
Q
Distinguish between reception, perception, and reaction?
A
– reception: stimulation of a receptor (light, touch, sound, etc.)
– perception: integration and interpretation of stimuli
– reaction: only most important stimuli elicit a reaction
3
Q
Differentiate between sensory deficits, sensory deprivation, and sensory overload?
A
– sensory deficit: deficit in the normal function of sensory reception and perception
- may result in another sense compensating for the deficit
– sensory deprivation: inadequate quality or quantity of stimulation
- often is due to environment changes
– sensory overload: reception of multiple, excessive sensory stimuli
- results in brain unable to respond to certain stimuli due to overload
