Q

Differentiate between sensory deficits, sensory deprivation, and sensory overload?

A

sensory deficit: deficit in the normal function of sensory reception and perception

  • may result in another sense compensating for the deficit

sensory deprivation: inadequate quality or quantity of stimulation

  • often is due to environment changes

sensory overload: reception of multiple, excessive sensory stimuli

  • results in brain unable to respond to certain stimuli due to overload
