What is the difference between actual and perceived loss?

A

actual loss: necessary loss (maturational) or situational loss (illness, death, physical change, etc.)

perceived loss: unique to the person and less obvious to others

What is the difference between normal (uncomplicated), anticipatory, disenfranchised (ambiguous), and complicated grief?

A

normal (uncomplicated)

anticipatory: grief that occurs before loss occurs

disenfranchised (ambiguous): pregnancy loss or loss of former spouse are examples

complicated: 4 types:

  • chronic: prolonged
  • exaggerated: self-destructive or maladaptive
  • delayed
  • masked
