Chapter 45 Flashcards
What are the 4 types of tissues in the human body?
Muscle
Nervous
Epithelial
Connective
What is muscle tissue used for?
Contractions.
What are nervous tissues used for?
For information transfer.
What are epithelial tissues used for?
For protection.
What are connective tissues used for?
For support of bodily structures.
What are the three types of muscle tissue?
Skeletal muscle
Smooth muscle
Cardiac muscle
What are skeletal muscles used for?
Surrounds the skeleton and is responsible for voluntary movements.
What are smooth muscles used for?
Responsible for involuntary movements.
What is the purpose of joints?
Endure pressure and movement.
Cartilage protects bones.
Ligaments stabilize the bones in place.
What is synovial fluid?
A fluid that lubricates the joint and is secreted by tissues exposed to pressure.
What are 2 diseases that affect the joints?
Osteoarthritis and Rheumatoid arthritis.
What are osteocytes?
Bone cells.
What can ensure recovery of bone injuries?
Maintained circulation and survival of the periosteum.
What is the function of the pericardium?
A membrane that surrounds the heart, secretes a fluid to reduce friction.
What prevents blood from mixing?
Septum
What prevents back flow of blood?
Valves
______ valves separates blood atrium from the ventricle.
Atrioventricular valves. AV
_______ valve prevents deoxygenated blood from going back into the ventricle.
Pulmonary semi-lunar.
________ prevents oxygenated blood from going back into the ventricle.
Aortic semi-lunar valve.
What is the function of coronary arteries?
To supply the heart with oxygen, nutrients and remove wastes.
What is the anatomy of the respiratory system?
Trachea ~~> bronchi ~~> bronchioles ~~> Alveoli
Where does gas exchange happen?
The alveoli
How do red blood cells carry oxygen?
Haemoglobin
What is a heartbeat
Systole (Ventricular contraction) and Diastole (ventricular relaxation)
