Chapter 33 Flashcards
What are interior of sponges lined with?
Flagellated cells called choanocytes.
How do sponges reproduce?
Asexual and Sexual.
What is the asexual way of reproduction in sponges?
They form small buds that break off and live separately.
What are gemmules?
Buds that form during asexual reproduction of sponges which can live in harsh environments that is not suitable for the adult
What is the sexual way of reproduction in sponges?
Sperm is released into the water, and the choanocytes of the other sponge draws it in and amoebocytes carry them to the egg.
Classify Hydrozoa.
Domain: Eukarya
Kingdom: Animalia
Phylum: Cnidaria
Class: Hydrozoa
What are the possible body plans of cnidarians and their function?
Medusa which is specialized for swimming.
Polyp which is specialized for sessile existence.
What specialized cells are used for defense in Cnidarians?
Cnidocytes / nematocyst
What are cnidocytes / nematocyst?
Long, and sharp filament which could be poisonous, which fires when something brushes up against these cells.
How do cnidarians relay information?
They lack a brain. Their nerve net of interconnected cells relays sensory information to contractile cells for nervous responses.
What is an example of symbiotic relationship with class hydrozoans?
Hydrozoans and photosynthesizing algae.
The algae supplies Hydrozoa with nutrients, Hydrozoa protects the algae from being eaten.
How do Hydrozoa reproduce when the environment is ideal?
Asexually / budding.
How do Hydrozoa reproduce when the environment is not ideal?
Sexually.
What is a symbiotic relationship that class Anthozoa / anemones have?
Anthozoa and clown fish.
They share food, anemones protect clownfishes from predators.
How do clownfishes go in anemones and none of them is harmed?
Clownfish removes sentiment to prevent anemones from being buried.
Clownfish secretes mucus to not get harmed by anemone nematocyst.
