Chapter 25 Flashcards
What are some eukaryotic organisms?
Protozoa
Algae
Slime mold
Water mold
What are protists?
Single celled or simple multicellular Animal like, plant like, fungus like organisms.
Any animal that is eukaryotic but isn’t classified as an animal is a protist.
Classify protists
They belong to the protista kingdom.
Are protists autotrophs or heterotrophs.
Both. Meaning there are protists that can make their own food and also some protists that obtain it from other organisms.
How are protist similar to fungi?
They secrete digestive enzymes to break down cells or bits of food into smaller molecules so they can absorb it easier.
How do protists move?
They have flagella, helping them move in a whip like fashion.
Others have cilia, moving them in a rowing motion.
And amoebas move by pseudopodia.
How do protists reproduce?
Many reproduce both asexually and sexually. But there are three ways:
1) Binary fission.
2) multiple fission.
3) conjugation.
What is binary fission?
An asexual way of reproduction that produces 2 genetically identical cells.
What is multiple fission?
An asexual way of reproduction that produces more than two genetically identical offspring.
What is conjugation?
Sexual, it is when two joins and exchanges genetic information stored in a second small nucleus. Cells then divide to produce 4 genetically different offspring.
What are 4 animal-like protists?
Protozoa
Ciliophora
Sarcomastigophora
Apicomplexa
