post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD)
develops from extreme stress of combat, a collection of signs and symptoms when a normal individual is exposed to an abnormal event, 4 features: response, reliving, avoiding, anxiety/hyperarousal
“the thousand-yard stare”
displayed by many combat soldiers, response to abnormal stressors/dangerous conditions
response
veteran responses to the experience with feelings of anger, fear, horror, and helplessness
reliving
individual relives these events by way of flashbacks, unwanted thoughts, nightmares
avoiding
person avoids anything that even reminds him of the trauma
anxiety/hyperarousal
nervous system arousal caused by trauma, “fight or flight,” so extreme that the veteran cannot suppress it
traumatic brain injury (TBI)
an alteration in brain function or other brain pathology caused by an external force
