Chapter 30: Musculoskeletal Trauma and Nontraumatic Fractures Flashcards
tendons
connect muscle to bone
ligaments
connect bone to bone
cartilage
an extension of the bond end, composed of connective tissue, smooth, strong, flexible, compressible, slippery substance found at the point of articulation of two bones, allows them to ride over each other during movement with little friction
flexion
bending motion, moves extremity towards body
extension
bending motion, moves extremity away from body
adduction
movement of a body part toward the midline of the body
abduction
movement of a body part away from the midline of the body
rotation
turns the body along the axis of a bone or joint
circumduction
movement through an arc of a circle or in a circular motion from a central point
appendicular skeletal system
the bones in the extremities including the shoulder girdle and pelvis
upper extremity
shoulder girdle, arm, forearm, hand.
- clavicle
- scapula
- humerus
- radius
- ulna
- carpal bones
- metacarpals
- phalanges
lower extremity
pelvis, thigh, leg, foot.
- pelvis
- femur
- patella
- tibia
- fibula
- calcaneus
- tarsals
- metatarsals
- phalanges
fracture
a break in the continuity of a bone
open fracture
a fracture with an associated open wound
closed fracture
fracture with no break in the skin
signs and symptoms of fracture
- pain
- tenderness
- deformity
- discoloration
- tingling/abnormal sensation (paresthesia) distal to fracture site
- anesthesia (loss of feeling) distal to fracture site
- paresis (weakness)
- paralysis
- inability to move the extremity
- decreased pulse amplitude, increased capillary refill time, paresthesia, pale cool skin distal to fracture site
hairline fracture
small crack in bone, doesn’t create instability
