Chapter 4: The Nervous System Flashcards
CNS
Central nervous system; brain and spinal cord; no nerves, integrating centre
PNS
Peripheral nervous system; everything else. Carries info to CNS, carries instructions from CNS to effectors
Effectors
Muscles and glands
Nervous tissue
- Neurons (nerve cells)
2. Neuorglia aka glia
Nerve cells
Aka neurons are the functional unties of the nervous system. Action potentials
action potentials
Electrical impulses (signals)
Cell body
Soma; part of the neuron that contains organelles (organs in the cell)
Nerve fibre
Axon. Fibre means long and thin. An extension of the neuron that carries signals away from its cell body to another neuron or effector
Dendrite
Extension of neuron that carries signals towards its cell body from another neuron
nerve
A bundle of axons in the PNS
Tract
A bundle of nerve fibres in the CNS (not the same as a nerve)
Myelin
A white fatty issue that insulates axons
Synapse
The site of communication between two neurons
neurotransmitter
The chemical molecule that moves form one neuron to the next at synapse; neurons don’t touch. Parkinson’s is a neurodegenerative disease
