Grades
students see their goal as getting good grades, not learning
students may link their self-worth with their grades
course overload
having too many courses or courses too difficult to complete well during one semester
more women felt they took on too many classes. 39% women and 18% males
finances

many students go into debt
many students work while they go to school

erotic love (eros)
a passionate, all enveloping love recognized by the heart racing, flutters in stomach, shortness of breath
ludic love (ludos)
a playful, flirtatious love. involves no long term commitment and is for amusement. usually with several partners at once
storgic love (storge)
a calm, companionate love. lovers are quietly affectionate and have goals of marriage and children for relationship
manic love (mania)
is a combo of erotic and ludic love. their need for affection is insatiable. they are often racked with highs of irrational joy, lows of anxiety and depression, and bouts of extreme jealousy. they seldom develop into lasting love
sex
females receive pressure to engage in sexual intercourse
at age 19 many females have never experienced sexual intercourse
90% men and 60% women masterbated at some time
many have had oral sex
sexually transmitted infections (STIs)
diseases such as syphilis, gonorrhea, chlamydia, and genital warts that are transmitted through sexual activity
acquired immune deficiency syndrome (AIDS)
a condition transmitted through sexual contact and the sharing of intravenous needles that leads to the mixing of blood or semen, in which the immune system becomes progressively ineffective
you cannot contract AIDS by giving blood
body may not show up with antibodies for aids for 6 to 8 months
human immunodeficiency virus (HIV)
causes AIDS
transmitted through bodily fluids such as blood and semen
high risk users: homosexuals, intravenous drug users, infants born to women with the virus in bloodstream
prevention of STI’s
abstain from sex
maintain a monogamous sexual relationship with someone you know that is STI free
use a condom that is latex not animal skin
acquaintance rape
forcible sexual intercourse between two people who know each other
1 in 4 women are raped
may feel ashamed, guilty, betrayed and frightened
rape is more about violence and control than it is sex
recommendations to prevent rape
expect respect from everyone
be clear about limits
don’t allow someone to touch you if you don’t like it
pour own beverage and keep in sight
don’t hang out in places where you are alone
trust instincts

jealousy
the fear of losing our property, whether it be lover, friend, status or power
we either protect our egos - argue with friends or try to get even
or we try to improve relationship
breakups
jealousy can lead to breakups
due to partners being too dissimilar, or because they have different expectations of the relationship
one important thing is attachment anxiety - being dependent on their partners to affirm their worthiness of having needs met
anorexia nervosa
an eating disorder in which a person takes in so few calories as to potentially starve him or herself
see themselves as overweight
weigh themselves repeatedly, portion food and eat small amounts
symptoms: thinning of bones, brittle hair and nails, dry and yellowish skin, growth of fine hair over body, mild anemia, muscle weakness, constipation, low blood pressure and lethargy
treatment involves: restoring body to healthy weight, treating psychological issues, reducing or eliminating behaviors or thoughts that lead to disordered eating and preventing relapse
bulimia nervosa
an eating disorder characterized by binge eating followed by purging of food, such as by inducing vomiting or ingesting a laxative
can fall in normal range for age and weight
usually have depression, anxiety and or substance abuse
inflamed and sore throat, swollen glands in neck and below jaw, worn tooth enamel and decaying teeth, gastroesophageal reflux disorder, intestinal distress and irritation from laxatives, kidney problems, severe dehydration
may undergo counseling and psychotherapy, cognitive behavioral therapy, medications like prozac
college and career
balancing can be hard
family and school
it takes a very understanding spouse to provide psychological support for a student who has family and work responsibilities
financial sacrifice is required by student and family
