Chapter 4- Photosynthesis Flashcards
1
Q
Heterotrophs
A
-must get energy from the food they eat
2
Q
Autotrophs
A
-can make their own food.
3
Q
Photoautotrophs
A
-take light energy and convert it to chemical energy using photosynthesis
4
Q
Photosynthesis
A
- reduces atmospheric carbon dioxide
- releases oxygen
- creates chemical energy that can be transferred through food chains.
5
Q
Photons (light energy)
A
-are used to synthesize sugars (glucose) in photosynthesis
6
Q
Carbon fixation
A
- process in which inorganic (CO2) is converted into an organic molecule (glucose).
- powered by electrons released from photolysis by photosynthesis and excites them using solar energy.
7
Q
Photolysis
A
-splitting of water molecules
8
Q
Photosynthesis vs Cellular respirtion
A
- Photorespiration and cellular respiration are reverse processes
- Photosynthesis breaks down CO2 + H2O to produce O2 + Glucose.
- Photosynthesis is nonspontaneous and endergonic, producing glucose after input of solar energy
- Cell respiration is spontaneous and exergonic, breaks down glucose to generate energy in form of ATP.
